Why should I take driving lessons with AAA?

For more than 75 years, AAA has provided quality, on-the-road instruction for new Rhode Island drivers. The AAA 6-hour program consists of three, two-hour lessons, and AAA can also take students for their road tests. Lessons are done on an ongoing basis, Monday – Saturday, from Barrington, Cranston, Greenville, Narragansett, Providence, and Warwick.

How do I get my permit?

A Rhode Island drivers permit may be issued once an individual has completed the 33 hour driver education course certified by the Community College of Rhode Island. For more information, call CCRI (401) 825-1214. Applicants must then go to the DMV headquarters in Cranston to take a computerized knowledge exam prior to receiving their permit.

*If you are over 18, a driver education course is not required to obtain the permit.

Do you provide home pickups?

All of our lessons begin and end from a AAA branch location.

How do I schedule a road test?

Road test appointments should be made at the time you receive your permit. You can schedule your appointment at any DMV branch location.

When can I get my license?

You are eligible for a limited provisional license after having held the limited instructional permit for at least 6 months without a convicted motor vehicle violation during that period. You must present an affidavit signed by a parent or guardian stating that you have completed a minimum of 50 hours of driving experience with a supervising driver, with 10 of those hours at night.

What fees are charged by the DMV?

  • Permit limited (under age 18): $11.50
  • Permit Instructional (over age 18): $6.50
  • Road Test: $26.50
  • Limited Provisional License (under 18): $11.50
  • First License (18 & over): $26.50
